Coexist bumper stickers are a popular way to show religious tolerance. Coexistence images also appear on shirts, other items. Learn history, meaning of coexist symbols.

Coexist bumper stickers promote coexistence among people who practice different religions and people who have different points of view. Some coexistence images address other issues as well, including the struggles between science and religion and religious questions about homosexuality. The coexist religious tolerance design is routinely seen on shirts, posters, mugs, magnets, buttons, and other products to advocate tolerance and peace.

History of Coexist Design Used on Bumper Stickers

A Polish graphic designer, Piotr Mlodozeniec, designed the first coexist image. He created the design to participate in an art contest hosted by the Museum on the Seam for Dialogue, Understanding, and Coexistence in Israel to promote religious tolerance.

Mlodozeniec’s coexist design has since been developed further. Today, many companies today sell detailed coexist images that use Mlodozeniec’s design as the foundation for their designs.

The popularity of the coexistence image skyrocketed after U2 used the image as part of their Vertigo concert tour. U2 used the coexist image as a backdrop to a portion of the concert, and Bono wore the coexist design on his headband.

Meaning of the Coexist Symbols

Piotr Mlodozeniec’s basic coexistence design is uncomplicated and easy to understand. The design uses three symbols that stand for Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Mlodozeniec modified the word “coexist” in the following ways:

  • for the letter “c,” a crescent moon representing Islam is substituted
  • for the letter “x,” the Star of David representing Judaism is substituted
  • for the letter “t,” a cross representing Christianity is substituted

Today, there are several different versions of the coexist design. Starting with Mlodozeniec’s conception, the newer designs add additional symbols:

  • for the letter “o,” the peace symbol or pagan/Wiccan pentacle is substituted
  • for the letter “e,” a male/female symbol or a scientific equation is substituted
  • for the letter “i,” a pagan/Wiccan symbol is substituted
  • for the letter “s,” a Chinese yin-yang symbol is substituted

Promoting Peace and Coexistence Among Different Religions

The coexist design used on many religious tolerance products promotes peace and reconciliation among people of different faiths, belief systems, and worldviews. The first coexist design focused on harmony between the three great monotheistic faiths – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Newer coexist designs expand the tolerance message to also include earth-centered and Eastern religions as well as issues surrounding religion and science and gender, including homosexuality.

"Coexist"? What the hell do you think America has been all about? Why do people risk their lives to get here? Do we behead gays or arrest someone for their religion? Have they read the Constitution or can they find their state on a map? People that place this nutty feel-good sticker on their cars are watching way too much TV. Now that "Kill your television" sticker always made sense to me......

It is a nice idea on a surface level. It also predominates in a culture where everyone says your truth is your truth. Problem is we all define truth somewhere, the only question is where?

What most people don't realize is that by slapping the major world religions/philosophical outlooks on the back of their car and telling them to "COEXIST," they are in fact subscribing to their own brand of truth, not standing as the objective judge of religion.

For those who would like a little background and a deeper look at the COEXIST sticker check out the link.

I put together a sign of my own that makes picture, only instead of Coexist, I'm using the word Harmony with different religious symbols around them. I'm thinking of posting it for all to see.

I think it is a good idea, because people are so disrespectful and rude when it comes to discussing politics and religion. Good manners are considered to be "political correctness". We are on the slippery slope to becoming like the Taliban, if we can't respect or tolerate another person's beliefs, and their right to have beliefs that are different.

Anyone that sports one is a complete idiot. It would be nice if the whole world could join hands, have a Coke and a smile, but that is not reality.

There is no way that all of the belief systems can coexist without issue, because they are all diametrically juxtaposed . You cannot have all of them be correct, when they all say that the others are wrong. Someone has to be right. Someone has to be wrong. Someone has Truth. The rest have evil lies.

Islam is about conquering. You cannot have Islam in bed with Christianity or Judaism. It does not work for them. Ask them. Read for yourself.

you know, when I first saw this bumper sticker, I was a little wary of its meaning. I wasn't sure if it was just a message about peaceful relations between different beliefs. If that's the case, I don't have any problem with it and some students at my private Christian school have them on their cars :) (however, I don't believe it's possible to be ever be perfectly peaceful though. There will always be problems in this world). But I did wonder if it was talking not just peace but implied an "all roads lead to Heaven" message. If that was the intended message, then for me this bumper sticker is very misleading and something that I don't personally agree with. It is a very nice idea at face value, but I would love to see if I could find a company description of the sticker and its true meaning!!!

I agree with the sentiments of most (here). The coexist bumper stickers are absolute nonsense, particularly as they relate to a specific religion that encourages violence towards infidels and apostates.

The guest from Jul 12, 2010 at 6:06 PM raised a good question about truth.
I found some lyrics from one of my favorite rappers on this topic:
"Some people say, 'All truth is relative, it just depends on what you believe.' You know, there's no way to know for sure who God is or what's really true. But that means you believe your own statement; that there's no way to know what's really true. You're saying that that statement is true. You're killing yourself. If what's true for you is true for you and what's true for me is true for me, what if my truth says your's is a lie? Is it still true?"

Why must we "coexist" as a society? What are we striving for? The purpose of most religions is to connect on a more spiritual level with the ultimate meaning of life, or even learning about attaining life after death. Why would people who believe in differences about how to gain eternal life want to "coexist" with somebody who [according to them] won't be admitted to "heaven?" Regardless of your religion/beliefs/spirituality, I don't think posting a "coexist" sticker on your car will make the tailgaters think more highly of you. Nor will it leave them with a sudden proclamation of "Oh, I think I need to be more tolerant of people because I now feel convicted, so I am going to back off of this person and be nicer to people." What is the purpose of these bumper stickers? We can't even coexist as it is with all the differences in social statuses, politics, race, and culture. So just because we have this "separation of Church and state" rule, means that religion is the only area of differences of opinion that we're going to impart a message of tolerance (or being nicer) to?

Personally, I think that because religion/spiritual matters are so touchy-feely for people, that NOBODY wants to touch it. Or talk about it. As I've already said, most religions deal with life after death, or supernatural experiences, and I think since these matters aren't something we can 100% prove or disprove, that uncertainty makes people cautious about addressing the topic.
Sorry for the ultra-elaborate response, but this is just something that has occurred to me recently after seeing many of these bumper stickers on passer-by cars.

The bumper sticker is not Christian and the Christians I know would not want to be bundled with cults and people who do not believe in Women's rights (Islamics). We CAN co-exist but don't put us all in one group. Let's get back to killin terrorists. Praise God for War and the co-existing that happens once we kill the bad guys. Peace.

Nobody has to co-exist. we are all given free agency to choose however we like. Just keep in mind when we have selective hearing, the blessings we recieve will also be selective and limited. We can choose what we want in life, we just can not choose the rewards or consequences. We can choose to respect other peoples views and get a long while finding mutual ground somewhere between the lines, or we can continue to disagree and be on opposite sides of the white line. Personally, I'd rather try to be a part of the solution than continue to be a part of the problem.

I believe in Jesus Christ and that he died for my sins and rose again
On the third day. Therefore I believe that there is only one road to
Heaven and that is through Christ alone. There is either absolute truth
Or not, it's either right or wrong. One can not pick and choose which parts
Of the bible to believe. When I see that bumper sticker on someones
Car I say a prayer...Jesus loves all people but does just stand by and
"tolerate" whatever it is people choose to do. There is a big difference
Between tolerance and love. Tolerance says "you can do whatever you want,
Believe whatever, and you are just fine". Love says "I love you the way you
Are but I love you too much to not stand up for what is true in order that
You may come to Jesus and be saved".

I think it would be hard for all people to coexist when killing infidels is written in the qur'an.

Think of this bumper sticker as your search for Truth:

You examine the crescent for Islam ("c"), but we know it's god to be capricious and violent - and since God is faithful and loving, then Islam cannot be Truth. Next, the earthly peace sign ("o") - no possibility of Truth there! Following that, a (backward, disrespectful) symbol for Hinduism ("e") with it's millions of gods - which can't all be Truth either. Then the Star of David ("x"), still looking ahead for Truth, a pagan symbol ("i") which can never be Truth, and a yin/yang ("s") which is philosophy, not Truth. Finally, you come to the cross of Jesus Christ ("t"), and guess what? You have arrived at the Truth, and your search is over! John 1:14 says "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

Search all of the worldly ways, religions, and philosophies you like (including many not on the bumper sticker), but when you meet Christ, you find what you are looking for!

" It's impossibe to ' Coexist with a theocratic political ideology that really does not want to coexist with us' . . . US Rep Allen West, ( R-Fl ), explaning why he doesn't like the 'coexist" bumper sticker with letters formed from symbols representing many different religions, 2010 campaign." --- Florida Sun Sentinal.
I agree but go further in that radical Islam doctrine dictates all "infidels" ( non-Muslims ) are to be converted to Islam. Failing that, they are to be subjugated. Failing that, they are to be killed.
Coexist ? How can one be so simple-minded, so foolish.

Wow, some people here are being quite bigoted. Guess what, there is plenty of stuff in the bible about killing infidels as well.
